Microsoft.Net Framework?

What is Microsoft.Net Framework 1.1 it is on my add remove programs and I
have not a clue as to what it is, also I have a question as to why all of the
sudden when I open any Office programs they say wait while microsoft word is
being installed....
did I do something wrong?

The .Net Framework is an undate to your operating system that is required by certain drivers and software applications.

My questions re this answer are two-fold -
ONE: When, if ever, would a home owner need this program? and
TWO: Windows update dumped it on me - and it takes up a lot of room!!
AND even more disconcerting is the fact that when Version 2 installs - it
leaves all the same version 1 files behind on my computer without removing
them!!
I have an older computer with small hard-drive.
Could I please have some guidance from a Microsoft spokesman as to whether
or not it is safe to remove the duplicate version 1 files? - and maybe even a
comment about why the Version 2 install doesn't remove version 1 files!

Apparently you do not realize that this is a public newsgroup and not
Microsoft Corporation. If you want to speak with a "Microsoft spokesman" you
need to contact Microsoft Corporation.

You don't need the .Net framework until you install software that requires
it. Since more and more software uses .Net, it's probably just a matter of
time before you'll be needing it. Install it now, or install it later. The
choice is yours.

Instead of avoiding otherwise useful software because you're out of disk
space, how about upgrading to a bigger hard disk? 80GB hard disks are easy
to find for $30, after rebates. And they come with detailed instructions on
how to move your software and data from the old disk to the new. Like with
..Net, it's only a matter of time before you'll need one.

I do not appreciate the tone of your reply!
I have been a participant in these newsgroups since 1995 and have never read
such crap!
I am sorry that 1 - I called them spokesmen rather than MVP, and
2- that I would not need a new hard drive if programs cleaned up after
themselves and 3- that my computer is working perfectly and I have no desire
to tinker with it and 4- why should I spend my time and money buying parts
and hiring installs so that software bloat can continue??? I have actually
now read an answer from a Microsoft MVP touching on this subject that was
both informative and polite - and will be attempting to contact him for
further enlightenment!!
I suggest you cool off the rhetoric and use these boards as a place to
pleasantly and politely exchange information with those of us who are not
regular computer users or nerds!!
