Microsoft .net framework problem

When I turned on my computer (runs XP) the following error message came up:

"Microsoft .NET Framework
An unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application.
Click continue and application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

When I clicked on continue it comes up with the same message.
When I clicked on details this came up:

v1.1 .NET is pretty old stuff,try reinstalling it,then move up to v2.0 or
3.0 or
v3.5 & SP1.

I'm having exactly the same problem as Wayne - think it is linked with trying
to open a document file by downloading a file converter. I just don' t
understand what to do about it. I cannot shut my pc down properly as I'm
stuck in this loop. I'm not a beginner but don't know how to find v.1.net
let alone re-install it

any help welcomed

george
