Microsoft is fumbling the ball and Linux just may win.

Piracy is a bad thing!!!
Here is my story:
A friend just purchased a new computer with XP Home Edition. When the
computer arrived by courier you would think they had used it to jam the
truck door open. The motherboard, CPU and CD-Rom where fried. The case
with our COA on it needs to be replaced. Now the courier is covering the
repairs with insurance, but the new case doesn't have the COA on it. You
can't move the sticker from one case to the other. So what is a guy to do.
I called the manufacture but the damage is the couriers fault not theirs.
The courier doesn't want to pay for a new copy of the software since it
wasn't damaged in the accident. Microsoft says it isn't their problem since
we have a valid license and the software isn't damaged. It looks like I
will have to take tin snips to the case and cut the license out so he can
have the COA. Maybe I will make it a little bigger and put a hole in it,
that way he can were it as dog tages. Owned by Microsoft, what a feeling.

Where did you buy this PC. If it was from a major manufacturer like Dell or
Gateway I would of sent it back. End of your story, let the original builder
replace what needed fixing and send it back to me. Or I would of just
returned it for a full refund.

So where exactly is Microsoft to blame in any of this?.. the computer
manufacturer did not obviously pack it too well, and the carrier went out of
it's way to prove the fact.. so far, Microsoft are not in the picture, other
than the fact that the OEM had installed Windows onto the primary drive..

The courier should have replaced the computer they damaged with the EXACT
same computer from the same manufacturer. The whole computer goes back, the
manyfacturer sends another one. Let the courier and the manufacturer fight
over the bill. You paid for a new computer, they damaged it, you are
intitled to the exact replacement. When you get the new computer it will
have a new coa sticker and product key. I'm not sure I understand the
problem here. Send it back to manufacturer, the courier pays, and if they
don't take it to court. You will win as long as you can prove they damaged
it. This has nothing to do with MS or piracy. It's just a damaged product
claim.

That would be too easy.

Besides, it's more fun to grouse about it.

Why can't you peel the sticker? I've done it a number of times. If you're
slow and careful, you wouldn't even know it was peeled and re-stuck.

Of course, the only thing you really need is the number, not the sticker
itself.

Use a hair dryer, set on "low."
