instead of the actual number. Why is this

More than likely because the cell is too small to accommodate the actual number.
Make the cell a little larger

instead of the actual number. Why is this?

It's just telling you that the number won't fit into the space alotted.
Drag the column a bit wider and you'll see your numbers.

Excel's the same way.
