Hi, Don't even know if I am posting this in the correct area. I got an email
today that had a word icon and was built in word. When I tried to open it
came up with the adobe message that says it needs to be updated. When I
called the guy whom sent it, he was no longer at his computer and couldn't
just fax the document to me. He said he just got a new computer and he was
running on Vista. We run on XP and he said I could go to Microsoft's website
and get a free download which will allow us to see his word document. I have
absolutely no idea where to even start looking. I went into the website and
there are thousands of downloads. Does anyone know what he is talking about
or how to solve this problem?

Hi Lori,

The Word document created on Vista is probably using the Office 2007
format and is a *.docx file. Office 2003 won't read these files unless
you install the MS Office compatibility pack SP1. The link below will
take you to it.

No, its simply the compatibility pack that allows you to open docs created
in 2007 format, as the article states

No, you can't open a Microsoft Word file with any Adobe product.

The fact that you have different operating systems is irrelevant. The
only issue is that you must have the same application program (or a
compatible one) as the one he used to produce it.

You've been given a couple of links to Microsoft downloads, but I'm
not sure that any of them is right for you.

Do you have an older version of Word? If so, and he sent a Word 2007
(.docx) file, you can download the compatibility pack for your version
at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

or http://tinyurl.com/3xr4tt

If you have no version of Word, and he sent the file in Word 2003 or
older format (.doc), you can download and use the Word Viewer at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en

or http://tinyurl.com/3qlb4 That will allow you to view, but not
modify the file or create your own.

If you have no version of Word, and he sent a Word 2007 file (.docx),
I think you're out of luck. As far as I know, there is no viewer yet
for Word 2007 files. Ask him to resend it in .doc format, and use the
Word viewer above.

The Word Viewer, together with the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack
for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats, allows you open Word
documents saved in the following formats:

* Word Document (*.docx)
* Word Macro-Enabled Document (*.docm)
* Rich Text Format (.rtf)
* Text (.txt)
* Web Page formats (.htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml)
* WordPerfect 5.x (.wpd)
* WordPerfect 6.x (.doc, .wpd)
* Works 6.0 (.wps)
* Works 7.0 (.wps)
* XML (.xml)

*Word not needed to be on your computer.*

Yes, I see that you are right. The compatibility pack does work with
the Word viewer, and doesn't require Word itself. I hadn't
noticed/realized that before.

My apologies to both you and Lori, and thanks for the information.

Please, no apology necessary. You didn't state emphatically that there
wasn't anything available.

I didn't think you could do it, either.

If I actually had a life, I wouldn't have looked it up :)

You should go out and buy Office 2007 Professional for all your machines.
You can then easily read documents others send you and confuse the
receipients of yours.

Full disclosure: The fact that I own a wheelbarrow full of Microsoft stock
has no bearing on my recommendation.

Go to MS site and use their search to find Word
Viewer but, you'll need to know what version of
Word they used; Probably, but not necessarily, Word
2007.

HeyBub's apparently as much an idiot as his monicker.
