I recently downloaded MS Antispyware and, for a while, run both that and
Ad-Aware. On every occassion, MS Antispyware has found nothing but when I run
Ad-Aware immediately afterwards, it finds spyware. Today it found 14 items
and although most of these were low risk, one malware (something called VX2)
had a risk rating of 10.

I've gone over the set up of Microsofts programme but can't see why it's not
picking up this spyware. I've not asked it to ignore anything. Does anyone
have any ideas?

That's why you should be running AntiSpyware, Ad-aware, and Spybot S&D.

They all pick up spyware that the others don't pick up.

A lot of the so-called spyware isn't really spyware at all, its tracking
cookies that sites use in orfer to be able to pay the advertisers who then
pay the site owners.

If tracking cookies are removed, the site owners lose income.

A combo of Adware & Spy bot is the safest & best, as Eric wrote earlier.
Forget MS beta.
same goes for antivirus I once used Symantec & Mcafee at different times BUT
no more. Now use only AVG.
Regards!

Thanks for your help. I knew there was a difference between spyware and
cookies and understand why cookies exist. I was just surprised that
Microsofts antispyware, which I understand is to be included in the upcoming
Vista OS, doesn't do the full job and needs to be supplemented with other
antispyware programmes.

One of the reasons I use the MS programme is because it opertates in real
time but I'll have a look at Spybot. Thanks again for your help.

No one program does it all for malware detection and removal.

Agreed that not one program can detect all kinds of spy wares.

But Spy bot & Ad – Aware SE, prevents, cleans, and protects most spy wares,
from machines of people with NORMAL surfing habits/ browsing.

Spy bot does prevent against active X, provided tea timer setting is on.

European anti spy wares & antivirus products are much better in performance,
accuracy & far superior!

There is malware that neither Adaware or Spybot will catch. I don't see
why you are making the claim about "normal" surfing habits. That has
nothing to do with the issue, whatever "normal" is by your definition.

Mr. Rock.( MSVP Windows):

I have Spy bot; Ad-aware installed on all of my machines.

Just to check their EFFECTIVENESS & your CLAIM, post the URL/ web address of
the site, which installs this rare species of malware & let’s see how
accurate your info is.

By NORMAL browsing & surfing habits you know what I mean & don’t act so
innocent & naïve. I shall be more elaborate so that you really understand
what I mean by it.

Crack sites, porn sites. People who have a habit of visiting often such
sites regularly, have tendency to get more spy wares, active X installed,
unless their OS is well protected against spywares & viruses.

I shall give you an example, multiple unchecked sexual encounters more
chances of getting infected with AIDS & STDs.

Take care & have a great weekend.

Regards.

Sorry about my poor English!

This has NOTHING TO DO with the quality of the ms anti-spyware
application.

Different anti-spyware apps find different things. Perfectly normal and
nothing to worry about.

Well for one thing drop the Mr. part. Rocks don't need salutations. So
crack sites and porn sites are part of your "normal" surfing"....lol...I
see. There are many ways for malware to get installed. Surfing is just
one of them. Have fun with your "normal" activities.
