Distribution may be a little shakey at first--look for 134/134 in
diagnostics for a proper update.

took me 3 tries.

Sorry about that, Bill;
OTOH, I'm elated to see that for the first time in 2 months I had success on the
first update attempt, instead of the 6th or 12th...
I did however un-install/re-install MSAS .701, and went from 56K dial-up to 4Meg
cable over the two week interval between Sig 5779 and 5781.
I truly believe it was the lower bandwidth connection that had me hosed... guess
I'll see after a few more sig updates.

Glad to hear that--both the success, and the new fast connection. That'll
make a number of things nicer!

Hi capitanu2k5;

I agree, you appear to be current, although the real test is to check Help >
About > Diagnostics
There have not been definition updates for two weeks - holidays in the USA. The
following should be displayed currently (at least until the next definition
updates are available and downloaded) :

-on the About window:
Spyware Definition Version: 5785 (this is current)
-and on the Diagnostics window:
Definitions Increment Version: 138/138 (both numbers match)
Definitions ThreatAuditThreatData: 1345263
Definitions ThreatAuditScanData: 2963787
Definitions DeterminationData: 744384

Having both Definition Increment Version numbers on either side of the "/"
match, along with the same Spyware Definition Version number as announced in
this newsgroup, indicates a successful definition update install. This need for
repeated updates problem doesn't effect everyone, but it's frustrating when it
hits you (there have been many reports of this.) I've been current following my
first update attempt with definitions 5781 after switching to broadband . That
followed about 3 concurrent months of not being able to update on the first
attempt through dial-up, even though I knew through these newsgroups that the
definitions were available before I even attempted to update. I'm not sure
there is a direct cause and effect relationship here, all I know is that
broadband solved the problem for me.

Windows® Defender Beta2 should resolve this problem for everyone, as the
distribution method will change to Windows Updates from it's present
implementation in Beta1.
