Microsoft Antispyware Beta and Netbios messenger

S

sag

Every time I boot my computer (Win2k) I get a popup from
Windows Antispyware that says Windows Netbios messenger
service is running...ignore or stop service? I will click
stop service and make sure the check box is checked to
remember this action, but it comes back the next day when I
boot again. I have always had messenger service disabled in
services and check each time I get this notice from my
Antispyware program to be sure that it is still disabled,
which it always is. Is this a bug in the program? Or is it
trying to tell me something and I am not getting it.

disable netbios from advanced connection properties and
disable the messenger service from the services list.
If you have Windows XP SP2, messenger service is disabled
by default.

Where do I find this "advanced connection properties" to
disable netbios in? Also, this pop up doesn't seem to show
up everytime I boot (for example...it did not pop up this
morning). I am running Symantec antivirus and am connected
to a network of 3 computers (home). I have all the latest
patches, updates for my OS and all my security programs. I
keep a tight ship in that regard. This seemed to start
happening after the last Microsoft Antispyware update.

Don't worry about disabling NetBIOS: that is not an appropriate action to
take. If you were to disable NetBIOS, you would not be able to see your
other PCs in Network Neighbourhoood.

All you need to do is to disable the Messenger service in Windows Services:

1. Right click "My Computer", select Manage.
2. In left panel, expand "Services and Applications"
3. Click on "Services".
4. In right-hand panel, scroll and select "Messenger", right-click and
select "Properties"
5. Set Startup Type to "Disabled"
6. Click "Stop" if it lets you.
7. Click "OK"
8. Close all windows.

Thanks for the response Robin. However, I have already
checked to make sure that Messenger was disabled in
Services. As you know, with the latest patches, Messenger
was disabled by default. I check it each time that I get
the pop up from Microsoft Antispyware and find that it is
always still disabled. Could there be a bug in the program
update that for some reason thinks that Messenger is NOT
disabled when it really is? I realize that this is a Beta,
but it seems from some of the chat sites that I have gone
to, that this is a problem for a number of individuals.
Does Microsoft know about this?

PS By the way, it would be nice if Microsoft would make the
task bar Icon change colors or have an X place over it when
the program has to be disabled for any reason. This way you
could easily tell if it is active or not.
