I am trying to get my db to close automatically when a user is inactive for a
period of time. Having searched the help files, I have created a blank form
called DetectIdleTime with the following eventProcedure:

Private Sub Form_Timer()
' IDLEMINUTES determines how much idle time to wait for before running the
IdleTimeDetected subroutine.
Const IDLEMINUTES = 1

Static PrevControlName As String
Static PrevFormName As String
Static ExpiredTime

Dim ActiveFormName As String
Dim ActiveControlName As String
Dim ExpiredMinutes

On Error Resume Next

' Get the active form and control name.

ActiveFormName = Screen.ActiveForm.Name
If Err Then
ActiveFormName = "No Active Form"
Err = 0
End If

ActiveControlName = Screen.ActiveControl.Name
If Err Then
ActiveControlName = "No Active Control"
Err = 0
End If

' Record the current active names and reset ExpiredTime if:
' 1. They have not been recorded yet (code is running for the first time).
' 2. The previous names are different than the current ones
' (the user has done something different during the timer interval).
If (PrevControlName = "") Or (PrevFormName = "") Or (ActiveFormName <>
PrevFormName) Or (ActiveControlName <> PrevControlName) Then
PrevControlName = ActiveControlName
PrevFormName = ActiveFormName
ExpiredTime = 0
Else
' ...otherwise the user was idle during the time interval, so increment the
total expired time.
ExpiredTime = ExpiredTime + Me.TimerInerval
End If

' Does the total expired time exceed the IDLEMINUTES?
ExpiredMinutes = (ExpiredTime / 1000 / 60)
If ExpiredMinutes >= IDLEMINUTES Then
' ...if so, then reset the expired time to zero...
ExpiredTime = 0
' ...and call the IdleTimeDetected subroutine.
IdleTimeDetected ExpiredMinutes
End If
End Sub

Sub IdleTimeDetected(ExpiredMinutes)
Application.Quit acSaveYes
End Sub

I then created a module called IdelTimeDetected as follows:

Option Compare Database

Sub IdleTimeDetected(ExpiredMinutes)
Dim Msg As String
Msg = "No user activity detected in the last "
Msg = Msg & ExpiredMinutes & " minute(s)!"
MsgBox Msg, 48
End Sub

Then I created a Macro called AutoExec:

Openform: DetectIdleTime
View: Form
Filter Name:
Where Condition:
Data Mode: Edit
Window Mode: Hidden

Once I open the db, I get an error message:
Method or Data Member not found.

Please help.

Not sure if this is a typing error or your problem, but...
ExpiredTime = ExpiredTime + Me.TimerInerval

Shouldn't that be Me.TimerInterval?

Also, some things you might try to help you track the problem down:

1. Set the debug option (Ctrl-G --> Tools --> Options --> General) to
"Break on All Errors." Then, when the program breaks, click on the "Debug"
button and it will take you to the line of code that caused the break.

2. For all modules, do this:

Option Compare Database
Option Explicit

Instead of this:
Option Compare Database

"Option Explicit" forces you to explicitly declare all variables which makes
things easier to trace when they go awry because of spelling and other silly
errors.

3. It looks to me like you have a subroutine in a module that's the same
name as a module (IdleTimeDetected). Not sure if that's causing problems,
but I try to avoid duplicate names anywhere in my programs.

I hope the above has been helpful. If not, post more info and we'll try
again.

Regards, Chris
