metadata

The most fundamental attraction that Windows Vista has for me is the promise
of organisation that metadata will bring. I have been banging on about it for
a bit now, trying to get digital archives and galleries to use it, with quite
a bit of success.

However not being able to try Vista I would like to know if meta-data
actually works as yet in Vista builds, also how does it manage 'bald' file
formats like .gif, which can't have any inputted meta-data?

Thanks

Yes, it works quite well. And you’re right, it is the most significant
feature in terms of productivity. (Albeit a bit of a WinFS tease).

There’s rarely anything you can go about file types that don’t have
metadata. But there are some exceptions. For example, you can get a .avi
file in Windows Photo Gallery and tag it there. Each tag being a chunk of
metadata. Even though you never see the tag data in the file’s properties,
it sticks. When you search for the tag name, even outside of photo gallery,
the file shows up.

I haven’t yet come across any way of getting around the problem with GIFs
though. GIFs don’t show up in Photo Gallery because they’re not
photo-quality images. So I’m not sure if there is or will be a way to tag
GIFs. I batch converted a bunch of GIFs to PNGs to hold onto the
transparency. An easy workaround really. So long as you have something that
can batch convert a ton of them quickly (if you have a ton of them).

Thanks, now that sounds prommising. So tags will actuallt "stick" to a file
even though they cannot be seen through the properties, is this just an MS
thing? because I want my tags to be universal, I hate lock in and that's not
what meta-data is all about.

Obviously .gif formats are not just going to dissapear strait away but they
are from a past era when they mattered, now meta-data matters more and there
are many format types that handle transparency - PNG's being one!

So do the tags work like delicio where spaces seperate them? I have used "/"
in the mean time to tag my digital cam images, will windows auto replace "/"
with " "? is there any part of windows that will change the meta-data on the
fly when migrating to Vista?

By the way when will WinFS actually be finished, bar a few plus packs and
bug fixes?

Thanks,

Samuel

Christ, if you want something done do it yourself. I was eading this not
realiing that I posted it! I thought to myself this guy sound familliar.

Here are the answers, now I've got Vista:

First off the indexing system and Windows Photo Gallery had to deal with the
mountain of metadata I had already inserted into my files, the worst is www.
addresses in the Authour field - DONT D IT WPG just falls right over.

If your like me and you like a reference point like a url for your images I
think its best to put that in the comments field. Its a shame there is no
dedicated field but there we are.

There are some fields like 'Subject' and Title that do not get sorted by,
even if you add them at the top of the window, as can be done with many
fields, it does not recognise the actual field you've just written in.
Seriously, the Title field is the name of the fiel, I think, well it not the
title meta field, the data would not show up for sorting only the first
letters of the alphabet...hm...

Oh man and what about PSD'd and PDF's, we all know that XMP is Adobe's but
guess what it annot be tagged in Vista, those formats are imosible to tag in
the oS - oh good one!

As for syntax, dont bother typing that into help, help is as rubbish as its
lways been. The syntaxt, o far as I've fathomed, works like this: you ether
type a word and space another ord to have a two word tag, or type a word,
pres right arro key (the word typed or 'tag' recieves a ";" at the end of the
tag - thi denotes the ending of a tag) or type a word / and another (with no
paces) and the first wrd (before the dash) become the parent with the word
after being the tag: so the tag (second word) i always under (like a
ssubfolder) the first word - the one before the /. get it:

like above, thing i I dont see the point. I get delicious, thats eay but the
way MS has done it I am still not sure about it? And whats really frickingC
anoying is when you want to edit a tag and it will only let you highlight the
whole word, rather than edit a few letters, plu if you copy and paste any tag
it come with the ";" which is really anoying with URL's!!!!

To be honest if you want ANYTHING jut hit the start button and type any
details you remember - its priceless, because it works perfectly. But dont
forget the indexing system doe not cover the windows directory so there i a
lot you wont scoop up in the first go.

Now lets see, oh yea file formats, best thng to do is check them by opening
them in bunches (not too many e.g. 15 files at once because then the files go
to iE instaed of Paint, yea paints all i got) if the backgoud is grey it
transparent and you choose weather a convertion to jpg would ruin the reason
you kept it. I'm archivng the stuff i really dont wnt to loose. So convert
tuff and tag it, its much better - you dont need bmp anymore

BTW Pain has not changed, except the colour selection is at the top. Paint i
still shit, you know when electing off the page and the scroll bas stay put
and you have to blindly imagine the end of the imae that STILL happens.

in fact Im pretty baffelled why there is o much inconsisency in vistas
design, its like a graveyard at ties with odd Win98 icons poppng up.

But if anything crshes it no bother, there's no need to reboot.

One thing I would like to see is the abiity to assign tags when saving a
file, I think that would save time hnting for the file after, images that is.

I say get vita, but you'll pend an age figuring out the tagging system and
the tagging the file. It'll be worth it - they could have thrown in some
batch apps to smooth things over like falkes renamefiles (lifesaver) or a
batch ystem to convert formats. It just windows I gues.

I'm happy I got that out.

It seems that when tagging images it works
