messenger

Some time ago, when when I was thinking I would shut off
the messenger service (in addition to putting up a
firewall), I made some tweeks. In addition to changing the
"messenger" service from "automatic" to "manual" in the
Services admin tool, I made another change. I kept the
following notes to help me undo the change if I
wanted/needed to:

In Network Connections | Internet Gateway | Internet
Connection | Properties | Settings

unchecked both boxes:
msmsgs (192.168.1.100:14451) 49145 UDP
msmsgs (192.168.1.100:8791) 39907 TCP

Now, however, when I go to "Network Connections" there is
nothing called "Internet Gateway."

Where are those settings that I "unchedked" before? (And
what is the effect of turning them off or on?)

That's a very nice page, but in fact I don't want to
remove or disable "Windows Messenger."

As I now understand it, the "messenger service" that you
enable/disable from "Administrative Tools" is not the
same as Windows Messenger. So if "msmsgs" is
the "Windows Messenger," I guess my original tweeking
involved two different things. There isn't anything I
could find on Kelly's page that explains the UDP and TCP
settings I changed or how/where to change them back. Or
if it's important to change them back for proper
operation of Windows Messenger.
