how do I stop the pc from automatically starting yahoo
messenger when I log on..or from just showing the little
icon on the hidden menu bar?

First, right click the icon in the system tray and see if there's an "exit
and don't restart automatically" option.

If not, programs like this usually start themselves from the registry in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

I've never used this app so I can't be sure this is where it's starting
from, but it probably is.

you know this is a Windows 2000 newsgroup...
....and yahoo messenger isn't even close to MSN messenger !!!

But... it's in the preferences.

When Yahoo pager is open, go to:
Login>>Preferences>>General and uncheck the option to "Automatically start
Yahoo Messenger".
