Messenger signs out when I log off XP

Every time I log off XP messenger logs me out as well. AIM stays up
and active but messenger doesn't. How do I disassociate what I do in
XP with what messenger does?

Like when I go to switch user and bring up the welcome screen that
action logs me out of windows messenger. AIM stays connected and
running, but messenger for some reason takes the action of switching
users as logging off of the program. Any ideas?
