I have this this service turned off, but every once in a while, I still get
these "Messenger Service" -pop-ups. When I check, something has changed its
setting to start automatically. I am the only user on this machine (I live
alone), I don't have a network here at home, I'm using AVG and Sygate as AV
and firewall, respectively. For internet I'm on cable.

What's going on??

Hi Thomas,

Where did you disable it from? If this the process you followed:

Go to Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Double click the
Messenger Service and change Automatic to Disabled, then click the Stop
button.

Or use this automated edit:

Disable Messenger Service (Line 95)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Then you need to check more into your firewall settings. Other than that,
you can delete the Service: To Delete the Messenger Service:

Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: sc delete messenger. Reboot.

Or...

Or go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

No, I created an icon on desktop-> %windows%\system32\services.msc

I'll try to deleting it, but I'm not sgure about reporting about it's
function, as this doesn't happen very often (twice this last month..)

Thanks...

Greetings --

You're firewall isn't configured properly, if messenger service is
providing its backup security warning role.

Use the firewall to ensure UDP ports 135, 137, and 138 and TCP
ports 135, 139, and 445 are _all_ blocked. You may also disable
Inbound NetBIOS (NetBIOS over TCP/IP). You'll have to follow the
instructions from firewall's manufacturer for the specific steps.

According to http://scan.sygate.com all ports are stealthed, so it has to
be a jscript or ActiveX that's running around. And no, I usually don't visit
very questionable places.... :-\

These new virus/trojan mails might be the culprits, as I always have preview
pane ON in OE, and even if Hotmail places them in Junkmail, I always check
junkmail to see if there is anything that shouldn't be there....
(alleged MS updates, non-deliverable mail (with recipients like Mail User
(hehhe) etc....

But we'll see...
