messenger service ads

I'm being swamped by messenger service ads. Popup blocker
is no help. Microsoft says to talk to HP and HP says it's
a Microsoft problem. Most of the ads are for programs to
block their ads! For a mere $30 they say they will block
further ads, including THEIR ads. It seems to me if 15
companies can come up with a way to stop themselves,
Microsoft should be able to come up with something. I'm
getting a minimum of 40 of these things a day. HELP!

Carol;
These ads are using Messenger Service.
Messenger Service is a valuable tool many use.
Like many tools, it can be exploited.

No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Microsoft _have_ come up with something, and it's already on your machine.
It's called the "Internet Connection Firewall", or "ICF". An article on how
to enable it is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=330904

But, of course, Microsoft isn't sending you messages thirty times a day
telling you that.

Alun.

Greetings --

Just exactly how much hand-holding do you need? Does your mother
still wipe your nose for you when you catch a cold?

Microsoft has provided a solution, built into WinXP. It's up to
*you* to learn how to use your computer and its operating system.

Greetings --

Does the title bar of these pop-ups read "Messenger Service?"

This a type of spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with" these
messages and the problem they represent is particularly foolish.

Greetings --

Please unstick your CapsLock key. Posting in all caps, as you
have done, is the Usenet equivalent of shouting, and is considered
very rude by many people. More importantly, posting in all caps makes
the post very hard to read, severely reducing your chances of getting
help.
