Messenger problem

A friend asked me to help him get rid of the icon which is automatically
loaded when he switches on.
I looked at the list of start-ups using msconfig but couldn't recognise
messenger among them.
How do I stop messenger from loading?

go to:
start->run->msconfig go to startup folder and search for msmsgs and
remove it from startup....

If the above solution don't work for you, you can do the following:

-run add/remove programs and then click on the add/remove windows
components, select windows messenger and remove it;

-if this also doesn't work: run ->gpedit.msc, select computer
configuration->administrative templates->windows components->windows
messenger and enable both options (not allow to run and not start
automatically)

You really need to do it from Messenger itself; Tools - Options -
Preferences and uncheck the 'Run when Windows starts' - otherwise if you
should load it the startup value mentioned will get restored

You need also in Outlook Express Tools - Options to uncheck the one to
'Automatically logon to Messenger'; and in its View - Layout uncheck
'Contacts' (which loads Messenger to manage them)
