messenger loads with OE

I am running XP Pro SP1. When I open OE, Messenger runs, but does not
log itself on. I have unchecked "Automatically log on to Windows
Messenger" a long time ago, but it runs anyway. It won't let me Exit it
either, saying that's it's being used by Outlook Express. Is there a way
around this or must I endure the little green men in the systray?

i was having the same problem - windows messenger was
launching when i launched outlook express - and it was
driving me crazy a) because i didn't understand why it
was doing that and b) because i didn't want it to!

i was a little hesitant to edit the registry (i have NO
idea what i am doing) so i kept on looking for more
information. i found a posting under "outlook express"
under "internet technologies" - "internet explorer 6.0"
that solved the problem with the click of a check-box. i
am pasting the relevant part of the posting here:

Subject: Re: Two Questions
To prevent MS Messenger from loading with OE you must do BOTH of these
things if you don't want to edit the Registry:

In Tools | Options uncheck the option to automatically logon to Messenger.

AND

In View | Layout uncheck the Contacts Pane.
