Messenger + DCOM

To begin with, I do not use nor have any desire to use MS Messenger. I'd
prefer it not even on my system if possible, but efforts to do such seem to
link it to greater forced functionality and looking for ways to prevent this!

When launching Outlook Express or even booting windows, it's little icon in
the systray comes up by default. The way I've been able to get around this
annoyance of having this rogue process on my system was always to simply
rename the exe- in C:\Program Files\Messenger from msmsgs.exe to like
msmsgs.exe.old or such. This has always fixed the annoyance/problem of an
unwanted messenger client from trying to open/connect.

Unfortunately, now DCOM+ fails to initialize on start as some other
driver/tool is trying to start this. It's looking like I'm going to have to
have this rogue messenger client running whether I want to or not?

My questions are:
1) Is there a way for DCOM/other applications to function WITHOUT having to
run an internet chat/messenger program?
2) Do I have to just accept a chat/messenger client running in order to have
XP Pro function?

Any insights will be greatly appreciated!
