On installation of Messenger 5.0 this message appeared "An error occurred
during the
installation of assembly component {874793FC-5F43-496A-8FE7-18C4DB9B143D}.
HRESULT=-2147024864".

Am running Windows XP Pro SP1 with all the latest updates.

Messenger appears to work despite the error message. However, when trying
to run Adobe Reader 6.01 the Messenger installation dialog box re-appears
and the same error message appears, so I can't use Adobe Reader.

Does someone have a fix? Or alternatively, can I revert to Messenger 4.7?

Try reinstalling Messenger.

To uninstall, use this command:
msiexec /x {4A432C6C-1E20-4266-95D1-5782349C6C62}

Then try installing the latest version from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...9f-6388-4193-8002-be55584c1ac1&DisplayLang=en

When trying to un-install, I get the message: "This action is only valid
for products that are currently installed". Attempting to reinstall from
the Microsoft site again results in the message I cited earlier, i.e. "An
error occurred during the installation of assembly component
{874793FC-5F43-496A-8FE7-18C4DB9B143D}. HRESULT=-2147024864"

Trying to run Messenger 5.0 or Adobe Reader 6.01 results in the Windows
Installer trying to complete the installation of Messenger 5.0, again
resulting in the error message I cited earlier.

This suggests to me that Messenger 5.0 is only partly installed. Note that
Messenger 5.0 does not appear in the list of installed applications.

Any more suggestions?

Gentlemen: I too have these same 5.0 woes! Tried the long uninstall/exec numbers and the reinstallation of messenger--same problem, same channel. I took the last gentleman's advice and downloaded 4.7 on top of 5.0 that will not install because of "...error during installation of an assembly component." 4.7 asked if I wanted to forfiet certain communication benefits like "...no phone connection to Bill Gates," etc.. I answered yes to all...walla! Now my PDF files work. How ironical though, first time I tried to write this message I clicked on the above "what's a display name--and the internet explorer hung...had to "end task" and start from scratch. Hey, I can live without that piece of data! Call me "it is working now!" Is it me, or do we have a problem here? Why does Messenger effect a PDF file? What if I want to "Shoot the Messenger" forever off my machine? Can't I e-mail MS without it? How is it intermixed with the rest of XP? Hope someone at MS is paying attention to this issue. Please let me know if there is a fix "other than" trying to reload 5.0--it has cost me 2 evenings time thus far. Thank-you, community, and mavens, and all. DR
