messaging interface returns unknown error again and again

Does anyone really have a fix or trouble shooting process for this messaging
interface problem. I hate Outlook for this problem. I tried the Brian Tillman
fix but it is not a lasting solution. It seems to me that if the system knows
there is an erro in the messaging interface it would know where the error
lies and direct the user accordingly. But Outlook plays dumb and leaves it up
to the user to unravel the mystery. Setting up Outlook is too complex. I
don't know if I am using Exchange Server or if I should or what is Exchange
Server or what to do with PST files etc.
Is there a clear and reasonably intelligent solution?
