I have a small classroom (20 PCs) networked running XP. Different Students
log in and out of the computers each class period. I would like to be able to
have a "thought of the day" automatically pop up when they log in. Is there a
way to do this using XP or some other (preferably free) software?

XP Professional ? - You can use Group Policy to create a login script
that will load/run your daily message.

Yes, XP Professional. Thanks. I will look into this strategy. Just to be
sure. I would be able to change the message from my computer and not have to
go to each of the machines and change the message?

Are the computers joined by a Server/Domain ? If no then you'd have
to have the script run local on each machine, but the content itself could
be located on a common share location accessible by each PC.

No, they are not joined by a server/domain. So, what type of script should
the local file be: bat, cmd, or something else?

Thanks for the help.
