A user is suddenly receiving two errors when launching Excel:
First: "Excel cannot open Access MDB files directly. To import Access data into Excel, use the Get External Data command: In Excel, pioont to Get External Data on the Data menu, click New Database Query, and then create a query to retrieve the data. For inforamtion about creating a query, see Help in Excel.
Second: " 'filename' is not a valid Excel file format.

This user had changed nothing on their system and has had MSOffice Pro installed for some time. Files do open once exiting these error windows. I have reinstalled Office.

Try

Tools>options>general>alternate start-up location. This should be blank.

Also check there is no *.mdb files in their xlStart folder. Everything in
here gets opened when Excel starts

Thank you Nick:
The xlStart folder was pointing to the User's My Docs
folder. Deleting this appears to have resolved the issue.

Many Thanks!
