Message when trying to reformat

I am trying to reformat my fairly new computer. This computer has 2 hard
drives, C: and D:. My last computer had only one disk drive and I would
reformat it by putting the XP disk into the machine and restaring. This
worked well. With this new machine however, I got to the point where I am
asked the 3 questions which I think are: do I want to setup XP, repair XP or
exit without doing anything. I go to the 1st option but then instead of going
through the usual procedures I get the following message:

Set up did not find any hard disk drives installed on yoru computer.
Make sure any hard disks are powered on and connected to your computer and
that any disk related hardward configuration is correct. This may involve
running a manufacturer supplied diagnostic or set-up program.
Setup cannot continue.

This computer was build instore as opposed to being a brand machine. I have
taken it back to where it was purchased but all they did was reformat it for
me and this of course hasn't fixed the problem. I feel they have not set it
up correctly. Would anyone have any idea if this is something I can sort out
for myself. I don't know too much about computers but have enough common
sense to follow instruction!

Many Thanks Del

Youre problem is having two hds installed at the same time when setting up
to install an OS (xp).First unplug machine, unplug the slave drive,if
connected
to same IDE cable as other drive, then you must also reconfigure the jumper
pins on the drive, set to master-solo Then restart computer, install xp,you can
replug other drive after xp is installed. Also, make sure youre BIOS is set
properly.

Since this is a new computer, you probably have SATA hard drives. When
you first start the XP install (and yes, you're doing it right!) there
is a prompt at the bottom of the screen to hit F6 if you need to
install additional drivers. You need to have your SATA drivers
available and press F6 then.

Here is a very detailed link about doing a clean install:

If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want to boot
the Windows XP CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows XP driver for your drive controller
in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows XP Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network.

Do you make this crap up during the day, or do you dream it at night?

*Many* people successfully install Windows XP while having two hard drives
installed.

It may be that WinXP doesn't have a good driver for the IDE/SATA
controller built-in. Very early in the boot process, just after having
booted from the WinXP CD, the screen will display the words to the
effect: "Setup is examining your system." Press <F6> when this happens,
and have the *manufacturer's* WinXP-specific drivers for your IDE/SATA
controller available on a floppy disk.

Thank you for the information. Could you please tell me what SATA drivers are
and how I access them?

Thanks

Thanks Dave.
I don't appear to have a manufacturers windows XP driver for my drive
control. I do however have a floppy disk that reads SiS 964 RAID installation
Support Disk, could this be the disk to which you are referring?

Thanks Del

Could be. If not check the manufacturer's web site.
