Merging partitions with BootIt NG

S

Steve

Hi,

I have a 6 GB drive that has been split into 3 x 2 GB partitions. The
primary holds Windows 2000 Pro SP4 and program files. The other 2 are in the
extended partition and are empty. All are formatted as NTFS.

I would like to use BootIt NG to merge all three partitions into a single 6
GB C: partition. Can anybody give me an outline as to the procedure?

I understand that I need to first create the bootable floppy and install
BootIt NG. Should I then delete the volumes in the extended partition and
then resize the primary partition to take up all the remaining space? Will I
still see D: and E: drives in Windows Explorer?

Basically, I want to merge C:, D:, and E: into a single C: and since there
is no data that needs to be saved in D: or E: it is an operation of
increasing the primary partition to fill the whole drive.

Also, once I have accomplished this I would like to uninstall the program to
ensure users do not accidentally activate it.

Thanks for the help. It may be the terminology that is holding me up more
than anything (resize vs. merge vs. slide).

If the two other partitions are empty, it would easier to delete those
partition and then "expand" the partition you want. It is easier to use
"unallocated" space.

Hi Steve,

BootIt NG.

You don't need to install it. Just create the floppy and boot it. Cancel the
install, then enter maintenance.
Should I then delete the volumes in the extended partition and then resize
the primary partition to take up all the remaining space?

Yes, BootIT NG does not have a merge feature.
Will I still see D: and E: drives in Windows Explorer?

No, once deleted they will no longer be there to be enumerated.

The extended partition makes it a little tricky, but not difficult
You will need to start by moving as much as you can from the first of
the volumes in the extended Partition (say D) into either C or E.

Then boot the BING floppy, do *not* install, but Cancel, entering
Maintenance and take partition work.

Highlight D and resize down as far as possible. Then click Slide and
push it up next E so the free space is in front. Now highlight the
containing Extended partition and resize, saying have free space all
outside at front. You can then highlight C and resize up into that free
space.

Exit, reboot XP and repeat until everything is removed from D, and then
next time you can delete that and start moving things out of E until all
is in C and you can delete E and the extended partition and resize C to
use all the disk
