Merging Excel to Word

When I export data from Excel to Word using "merge to new document" I am losing some of the formatting and the "£" symbol, e.g. £25.50 in Excel becomes 25.5 in Word. Similarly, £2,375 becomes 2375 - losing the currency and comma. Can anyone help
