Merging cells in a purchased template

G

Guest

First let me tell you I am pretty much a newbee to Front Page. I purchased a
template from ECommerceTemplates and for the most part it is fine, however it
has three cells at the very top (header) one with a small graphic, one with
the company name and one with search. The company name is an includes file.

What I want to do is replace all three with a custom graphic I created in
Fireworks that should go all the way across the top. I had planned to have
the site static at 800 X 600 because many of our customers have older
computers.

If I merge all three cells, then delete the graphic and search bar and
change the includes file to look for the new graphic, it should work I think,
but I am still having some problems with the width not matching up with the
rest of the site and wonder if there is a way I can do this without having to
go to each page, merge cells, delete unwanted stuff, etc.

Also, is there a better way to do this??? Thanks so much for your help.

Have you contacted the author of the template for help with this issue?

Make the image about 760 pix wide. since 800pix is the actual width of that
resolution of the monitor, some space is taken up by the browser window tool
bars, status bar and menus etc. So you don't get to use the entire 800 pix.

Thomas, Thank you for your input - yes I have asked the template company for
help and left messages on their forum but haven't received a reply. I
thought there was probably a really easy answer. I have thought about using
the graphic as the background and making the three boxes transparent (or
sending them to the back) but I don't know if that will work. I just hate to
have to change all of the pages one by one because there will be hundreds of
them.

Andrew, thank you for that information. How do I get the whole site to use
the same dimentions? Also, please see my reply to Thomas regarding the
merging and replacement of the cells with the new graphic.
I hate to go through and change all of the pages and then find out that It
doesn't even work and that I have to go back and change them all over again.
I want the width of the entire page to be fixed at 760 including the header
and I want to replace the 3 cells with one. What is the best, fast way to do
that to all pages?
Thanks!!

So try it on a dead page first, if it works do the rest.

Open a page...any page and do a Save As a new page name...mess with that one
and not your real one...if it works you'll have to do that to all your
pages. But you can save the experimental page to use as a template.

How about just copy and paste? That works for me when I have alot of stuff I
want on every page to make it look uniform.

Thanks, Rob. The site is brand new so I have lots of copies to try things
on. Our current site is still up and running. Clients and my employees hate
it, but it buys me time to play around with the new one. I just didn't want
to waste time. I figured I could make an includes file with the merged
cells, or do it in the css, or something. I guess there is no easy way to do
it. Maybe the template would work, but I would still have to add the
template to every page - right? or do I put it in the style sheet, or???????
Thanks for helping a newbee learn.

Thanks for your answer - I need something that can be updated and changed
more easily than going through every page. This site will eventually have
several hundred pages and that would be a nightmare. I think I will
investigate the template option more to see if that might be a help. I do
appreciate your help!

You're welcome. Also check out using DWTs, may be a tad confusing for a
newbie, but read Help on them and keep them in mind.

That's the problem...there's usually too many ways to do things.
As a newbie; keep it simple for now.

Thanks again to Rob and everyone else who posted answers. I spent the past
few hours reading my Front Page 2003 for Dummies book and other information
about dwt files and I think it might be the way to go. I found out I can
apply the template to many or all pages at once. I am going to give it a try
tomorrow and see what happens. I'll let you know if it works because it
might help someone else in the future. Thanks again!
