merged outlook email messages not sent

I get all the way through the Outlook 2003 email merge procedure, but the
last step of merging to email fails to place the merged messages in my Outbox
for sending. Outlook is set as my default email client.

No error messages, and nothing went into the drafts folder. Outlook goes
through the motions of generating the emails but they don't get sent or put
in the outbox.

Through a reply by JKVC@UIUC to a post on the Microsoft Office Outlook Team
Blog I got this lead that led to a solution:

http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook/archi...rsonalized-e-mail-to-many-people-at-once.aspx

"You can personalize your emails and add attachments if you first take
Outlook offline (under File menu). If you do that before you finish the mail
merge, you can avoid having everything go out automatically. Instead it gets
sent to the Out box, where you can fiddle with each email individually and
add attachments. Then hit "send", and when you go back online (toggle the
switch under file menu), everything will go out. Just be sure you do
everything you want before going back online, because everything in the out
box will go out automatically. Alternatively, you could move the files to
Draft box, where they will sit until you are ready to deal with them."

In my case the problem was caused by telling Outlook NOT to send outgoing
emails immediately but also not taking Outlook offline, as described above.
If you do both, the merged emails will go into the Outbox to await further
processing. However, if you turn off automatic sending but don't take Outlook
offline, the merged emails will be lost.

Do you get any error messages? Are they placed in the drafts folder instead?

That sounds like a bug - it should not matter what you have selected for
send and receive options - they should sit in the outbox until the next send
and receive.
