Merge Cells, but keep backgrounds

In excell 2003 is there a way to merge cells so the text spans them
all, but keep the current background of the cells (which are not all
the same color)?

No

Try Center Across Selection and avoid merged cells whenever possible.

Is there a way to center across selection vertically or just
horizontally?

Thanks for all the help!

You might consider not entering the text in a cell but using a floating
textbox that is see-through. You can make the textbox fit the selected cells
by sizing and positioning while holding down the Alt key. After you get it
postioned, choose Format, Textbox, Alignment - center vertically and
horizontally, then on the Color and Lines tab set Fill Color and Line Color
to none.

Hi,

In addition you can have the text box reference a cell where you can enter
the text you want it to display. Then you can hide the cell content by using
a custom format of ;;;

To create a reference in the textbox to a cell select the border of the text
box and type = on the Formula Bar and then click on or type the address of
the cell where you want your entry to be made.
