"merge and center" grayed out

A colleague made a spreadsheet, sent it off to a client who added some
information, and when it came back, he couldn't use the "merge and
center" button. It was permanently grayed out. Copying the spreadsheet
data to an new spreadsheet fixed the problem, in that he could merge
and center in the new one. But what could he have done to fix the
problem in the original?

Simon,

Maybe the Serendipity option is checked. Merge and center generally causes
a lot of trouble down the road anyway.
 
Was the worksheet protected?

Tools|protection|Protect sheet (or Unprotect Sheet if it was)
