Menu access key underlines not visible for MenuStrip

The underlines for the Access Keys in a Windows Forms menu are not visible in
even the most basic application on my system. I created a Windows Forms
application and added a menu strip with a &File menu item and &New, &Open and
E&xit subitems. The underlines are visible in design view but disappear when
the form is run.

My system is Windows XP Professional with Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition
for Software Developers but I also have installed Visual C# 2005 Express
Edition, Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition, SQL Server Developer
Edition and SQL Sever Express Edition. Does anyone have any ideas on what
might be happening? I am a rather new .NET Developer and I'm not even sure if
I should be somehow reporting this to Microsoft. Thanks for your help!

This is a standard Windows appearance feature. To change this feature's
setting, right-click "Desktop" and select "Properties". Then select
"Appearance" tab->"Effects..." button. See the check box "Hide underline
letters.....".

Hi dmgrass,

Thanks for your post.

First, does this problem occurs with other applications? Such as IE or
other standard windows.

Second, if you pressed alt key, does the underline appears out?

If the answer to both 2 quetions are true, I think it may be caused by
system settings. You may open "Display Settings" dialog in Control panel(or
right click the desktop choose "Properties"). Then click "Appearance"
tabpage, and click "Effects" button, you can uncheck the checkbox below:
"Hide underlined letters for keyboard navigation until I press the Alt
key".

At last, you can click all the "Ok" buttons to close these dialogs.

I hope this may resolve your problem. Thanks

Thanks very much to both Jeffrey and Norman! I feel like such a novice!
Obviously I don't use access keys myself because I've never noticed the
absence of underlines in other applications. You have saved hours of
frustration because have would have been looking in the wrong places for the
answer!
