Memory

I have a general question regarding a problem that has
been developing slowly over time. I have 256 meg main
memory. Over the past several months my memory usage
continues to increase. For example several months ago I
utilized about 150000k at start up now I am at 305420k.
Both of these numbers come from Task Manager. The only
real additions made to my system was download of critical
fixes from microsoft and spybot s&d and cw shredder.
How do i determine what is using the memory?????? I hear
about background programs ie they don't show up in task
manager under applications but they are still in memory
waiting to execute??
Thanks in advance,
Greg

I have tried playing with this idea of what is running on my computer. What
I tried was starting in safe mode then going to task manager processes and
writing down everything by hand. Then boot back up into normal mode and go
immediateley to task manager processes and again write everything down by
hand.

If anyone knows how to do this without using a pen and paper I would like to
know as it takes a long time to do this. Also if anyone knows how to
identify the process running I would like to know also as I run a search for
each one at a time, then when I find where it is look up its properties and
if this doesn't help do a search on google for it and find out there what it
does.

I figure I must be missing something as shouldn't an operating system be
able to tell you what it is operating?

.
At least it is encouraging That I am the only person who
sees memory usage increasing w/o an understanding of why?
Thanks,
Greg
