Memory Vs Graphics Card..

A firend of mine has bought himself a pc - a real cheapie out of a catologue
me thinks.......

It has 256 memory but the on-board graphics uses up 64 meg of this so he is
running with 192 which is the leftover. I've tried to get him to get some
more memory as he is running on a very limited set-up......his budget is
non-existent so we arent getting anyware.

Well, lo and behold,,,,,,,at the back of my computer bits n bobs box.......I
discovered my old G Force 2 64 meg graphics card.

It set me thinking would it be better to install this into his machine and
free up that 192 meg - then disable the onboard graphics..........to get him
back to 256 again..........

He hasnt told me what the on-board graphics is......it's a real "happy
shopper" pc so I dont expect it to be anything amazing.......

Any help appreciated

DB :)

First thing to check: Is your graphics card compatible with your friend's
computer?

Telling me the details of the card doesn't help you. The point of my
original post was: Call the computer manufacturer. They built the computer,
they know what works with it.

Some Biostar boards have what is called 'enhanced' AGP.. good in its way,
but unfortunately not compatible with the majority of video cards.. other
manufacturers boards may display similar traits.. check with the motherboard
manufacturer first..

To others who replied negatively and with aggression, you need to get out
into the real world.. you would quickly find out that some video cards will
not play ball with certain motherboards regardless of whether the spec of
the card seems to match that of the AGP slot..

That's rather hypocritical, I'd say. Can you try using some tact? The skill
is called Emotional Intelligence, if you really care to be a decent person.
