Memory upgrade?

Hiya

Im considering making a memory upgrade sometime soon, to help gaming performance and I was wondering if this is a wise option or not. I currently have 2x 256mb PC2100 memory running at 2.5 - 3 - 3 - 7. I only have two Dimm slots on my motherboard (Aopen AK79D-400VN) so it would be useful to consolidate these two sticks into one 512mb stick.

My motherboard will take up to a PC3200 so i was wondering if a jump to a PC3200 512mg stick (maybe crucial ballistix http://www.dabs.com/uk/Search2/Product+Details.htm?quicklinx=397N&searchphrase=crucial ballistix )

or would a cheaper kit, of something like Kingston ValueRAM 2x 512mg PC3200 memory on ebuyer be better?

I've read that AMD procs are grateful for lower latency (mines a AthlonXP 3000+), but is it size or lower latency thats going to have more of an effect on games?

Any help would be appreciated :)

a 400MHz FSB processor (Athlon 3000+ or 3200+) needs PC3200 (DDR400) memory to run at it's fastest....

Get CAS2 - the GeIL stuff is good - www.overclockers.co.uk sell it - a gig for under a hundred quid... top stuff.

Get a dual channel kit as opposed to a single stick... if your motherboard supports dual channeling

I'm always telling people ... Before choosing any 400 memory, check with your MB manufacturer website and see what they recommend what memory works with their board.

That geIL memory is CAS2.5, will I notice the difference CAS2-CAS2.5?

Im not bothered about overclocking it so I suppose a slightly higher latency isnt gonna matter much.

Its the first time ive heard of GeIL though, cheap memory specialists?
