If the laptop's description is 512MB Shared, 2 DIMM. It means it has 2
memory slots? And maximum of RAM is 1024MB? I am still learning the
memory types.

please advise. thanks!!

"shared" means that you probably have on board video and that it is using
some of your RAM.

2 dimms means possiblly room for 2 RAM chips (2 slots).
currently each slot has 256 mb chip

Max RAM that is unknown. you have to check literature from MFG or contact
MFG!!

The "shared" part means that system memory is shared with the graphics
adapter. Yes, "2 DIMM" means your laptop has 2 physical slots and the
maximum amt. of RAM means that's the highest amt. you can install
(1GB). A good place to learn about RAM is on Crucial's website here:

Well. Shared means shared with your video card. ie your video card/ ie
chipset on the mobo, is using mobo ram to run.

Your query has probably been answered.
Some advice, shared mem means as written earlier that the mobo has a built
in video.
On bard video sucks system resources.
Personally would advise you to install a 32MB AGP, its dirt cheap.

Incorrect. Onboard video just uses part of your motherboard ram to
operate.

I know & agree that uses part of ram.
But does suck system resources (if you know what they are), like software
modems suck too.
Regards!

Well, I'm still a super fan of external US Robotics modems and maybe
always will be. Cant get any more REAL than that eh? Heck, I even allow
them to take com1 :)

On the other hand, the software modem "problem/issue" hasn't really been
an issue for several years with modern pcs with lots of ram and hispeed
cpus, etc.

It's a LAPTOP!!!!!!!!!!! The advice is completely incorrect for the
situation.

In a laptop? Nice trick if you can do it.

On board video has made some tremendous strides recently. It might
surprise you to realize that top Video vendor is not ATI/nVidia it is
Intel. I use the on-board 865 chip and it handles most everything I
need to do, that includes some very intense Google Earth rendering.
Also both nVidia and ATI are now offering embedded chipsets on
a number of motherboard products.
