Memory problem

I have a MSI K9N4 Ultra board on which I am trying to increase the RAM to
4Gb. I am using two 2Gb modules. When both are installed the system will not
post. It boots fine with either of the 2Gb sticks or in combination with a
1Gb stick. User manual indicates the board will accept 4Gb. Anyone have any
idea as to what I might need to do to get it to see 4Gb?

Leave it at 2GB. There are various things you could try to get it to
recognize and boot with 4GB. But you won't see a performance increase over
2GB, so what's the point, exactly? I'm not being deliberately obtuse, btw.
I'm serious when I say that more ram past 2GB won't increase performance.

If you don't want to take my word for it, fine. Spend the next several days
screwing around with it to get it to work, then run your benchmarks to find
you are right back where you started. Not being a smartass, btw. If you
still don't believe me, run the benchmarks at 2GB and 3GB, both of which you
can easily do right now. Notice no difference? Well 4GB will be the same
as 2GB and 3GB. So forget about 4GB. -Dave

When I look in an MSI manual here, I see "Software Memory Hole"
in the memory configuration setting. Have you tried changing that
setting ?

Other than that, about the only other thing I can think of, is
trying another BIOS release.

Thanks Dave,

I appreciate your candid reply as I had been told something different by a
friend.

Thanks Paul,

In my manual, I don't the same thing as you, in fact the memory
configuration is pretty weak. Unless I can find some different info, I'll
probably just follow Dave's suggestion for now.

Out of interest, have you considered your PSU ability to power the new
amount of memory?
I recently doubled my RAM and had exactly the same result. no post
unless I put less in. Getting a new power supply unit was al I
needed. The one I had for ages wasn't so good and the ram just took
it too far. I worked that out by disconnecting some stuff and then
seeing that the RAM worked fine.
Just a thought...

Had not considered the PSU, thanks for the heads up, I'll give it a go.

It sounds like the motherboard does not like that brand/model of RAM. I
would try a different brand of HIGH QUALITY RAM. Cheap RAM frequently gives
the problem you are having.
