Memory Problem

I recently purchased a Compaq Presario notebook with 256 KB RAM and XP Home
SP2 preinstalled. I upgraded to XP Pro and added another 256KB RAM.

When I run setup, it recognizes the 515KB, but when I check windows, it only
recocognized 384KB RAM. Any clues?

Perhaps shared memory for the graphics card?

Apparently, your video card adapter is designed to share memory
with your RAM. 128MB is being allocated for use used by your video adapter.
You can check this by opening your BIOS.

Correct terminology required. The days when RAM was counted in KBs are long
gone - even the first systems had 640K. RAM these days is measured in MB.

How much RAM was Windows recognizing before you added the 256 mb?

If the system is using 128 mb for Video, which is one possibility,
then it should have only shown 128 mb for Windows before the upgrade.

Another possibility is a configuration setting.

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG, go to the BOOT.INI tab and click on the
Advanced Options button

In the Advanced Options window make sure that the checkbox for the
/MAXMEM= line is clear and that there is no value in the data box for
this.
