memory issues

I have been working on large (50-100Mb) bitmap files
recently (with Paint Shop Pro) and continually get a
Windows message saying I'm out of memory which effectively
ends the session (specifically--not enough memory to
complete the operation, close apps., etc. to free up
more...can't do anything further at this point!). I have
100's of Mb's of ram unused (2Gb total) and only a small
fraction of the page file occupied. Is there a windows
setting somewhere that I need to be familiar with?

Win XP Pro SP1
2.2Ghz P4
2Gb ram

When I try to use the Preset shapes in Paint Shop Pro I get an Out of Memory
error.

Resolution
You may need to rebuild the Shapes Cache file for Paint Shop Pro. Please
follow the instructions below to reset Paint Shop Pro's cache files.

Close Paint Shop Pro

Double click the following,
My Computer
C: Drive
Program Files folder
Jasc Software Inc. folder
Paint Shop Pro 7 folder
Cache folder

In the Cache folder click on the shapes icon then press the Delete key on
your keyboard.

Once this is done you can open Paint Shop Pro and choose the Preset Shapes
tool. Paint Shop Pro will take a significant amount of time to load the tool
while it rebuilds the Cache file. Once this is rebuilt the tool should work
properly and will go back to normal speed after the tool Cache has been
rebuilt.

If you are using several layers of undo, it may be allocating a large
chunk of memory space each time - which can add up. If these areas are
not actually used (or not to any extent) it will not show as usage of
page file, but will need the capacity for the page file to grow should
they all be taken up. So put the Max (not initial) size of the file way
up - say 2 GB. In a worst case put a second one on a different
partition as well. You may also be limited in the end by the virtual
address space available to run an application, normally 2GB out of the 4
that can be addressed in 32 bits.

And check that there is not some other software sitting around and
playing tricks on virtual memory - certainly any program that purports
to optimise or manage memory is bad news. And some apparently unlikely
things like Symantec Live Update can cause spurious out of memory
conditions

Check to see if all your memory is being recognized. Start---all
programs---accessories---system tools ---system information. Check task
manager to see how much memory is being used.
