How do I get this tool off my taskbar from starting on startup? All of a
sudden it's there. Also where does the file go when you do run the test.

Debbie Graham,

It would be nice to have a little more information. I assume you are running
Vista but I don't really know.

What tool is it? Where did it come from? Did you download and install it
yourself. If so you should know where the file is located. Is the tool a part
of your AV software?

You mention that the tool is on your taskbar? Where on your taskbar? Is it a
quick launch icon? Is it on the far right side of your taskbar near the clock
which would indicate it was a startup program?

Go into Windows Defender and try to disable it there. If it is not there,
you can go into Task Manager and disable it or you can use Process Explorer
to disable or kill it. Have you checked msconfig to see if it is located
there as a startup item?

You really don't give any information so it is almost impossible to help
you. Have a nice day.

Where on the Taskbar is it located, Quicklaunch, Notification Area,
'Taskbar'? If its the Quicklaunch, simply right click it an delete it.

Yes Vista and it's the tool under Administrative Tools, the Memory
Diagnostics Tool. I ran it one time to test my memory but I never saw any
results and now it shows up on my taskbar.

Can you do a system restore to see if it will remove it?

It's by the clock and I was able to remove it through Defender. The
application was MDRES.exe Have no idea what caused it to show up on the
taskbar. When you do a memory test where does the log go? It says you
would see one when Windows reboots but never h ave

well I thought I got rid of it but I didn't. So how do I stop it from
showing up

I like you used the Memory Diagnostic Tool & as you say it continues to
appear in the Start Up section of the Task Bar, I have not found a way to
remove the process completely, it is not listed as a services, and does not
appear in the start up programs in Defender.
I can only stop the program from running for the current session by ending
the process in the Task Manager.
Using the Taskbar & Startup Properties> Notification Area > Customise, you
can hide the icon.
The file (MdRes.exe) is located in the System32 folder of Windows
I have been trying to delete now for a few weeks I have not found how to
stop it permernantly.
We get back if successfull

If advise given from anyone, solves problem or not, or if solved from
another source, post back & let us know.
Then we all benefit.

Seeing as how the "results" icon (and balloon) that is temporarily seen in
the notification bar goes away after about 15 seconds, and seeing as how it
is also cleared after a reboot, I surmise that you are using a laptop
computer. I also surmise that you never really reboot your computer, but
allow it to go into sleep or hibernation mode. By doing this you are likely
forcing the icon to be repeatedly visible. Shut down or reboot your laptop
the correct way and the icon should no longer be visible.

There is no "results" file created! Look in the event viewer to see the
results of the memory test. It says the same as the balloon for the results
icon shows.

I was able to stop it from showing up on the taskbar. It was listed in the
task schedule, so I removed it from there and now when I reboot it doesn't
show up. Also I do shut or reboot my laptop, I don't let it go into sleep
mode.

since the heading for this discussion is: "memory diagnostic tool" and her
comment that it just started popping up on her taskbar should tell you all
you would need to know to answer her question, as i can see you still haven't
done. if you can't get the question from that info you surely don't qualify
to answer it. it is really a simple question that i would like answered
myself but obviously it's above your head.

I have to disagree. Much more information is required. Without that, it's
just a shot in the dark.

So here's my shot in the dark. Go to whereever this tool is on the taskbar
and right-click its icon. See what options come up then. Maybe a simple
"close" will handle the problem. Or maybe the menu that pops up will give
even more useful options.

If that doesn't work, we can try more shots in the dark, unless the OP is
willing to divulge more info.
