When I close just one of my apps I receive the message shown in "Subject:"
above. The message is followed by another which says that the app was not
closed down correctly. The app is Backup my PC by Stomp Software. As far as
I can tell the software works OK when I come to use it again.

Any ideas what, if anything, I should do about this?

So have you checked their website to see if there is a patch for your
product? Are you lingering onto an old version of their product that
really isn't supported under Windows XP (or your service pack level)?
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling (you can probably rebuild the
catalogs by rescanning the backup media or locations)?
