Mekko charts in Excel 2007

George Burdell

I'm trying to create a mekko area chart in Excel 2007 like I do in Excel
2003. However, it appears that one can not change the X axis of an area
chart to timescale. Does anyone know how to create mekko charts in 2007?

Tushar, thanks for the suggestion However, Stephen's funchrt5 creates a
chart like a mekko chart, but it is not a mekko chart. Jon Peltier has an
example of a mekko chart at
http://peltiertech.com/Excel/Charts/NonNative.html#MatrixChart. One of
steps in creating it is to change the x axis to a time series. I'll see if
I can figure out how to stack things and full the chart area. However, I
suspect that is beyond me.

It appears that Microsoft forgot to retain that capability in Excel 2007 to
change the x axis on area charts to a time series. I guess at this rate of
improvement and "depreciation" [of features] when they release Excel 3000 it
will have just one cell and no graphs, but cost a million dollars and will
consume all system resources. Aren't monopolies wonderful....

Hi,

I just tried my variation of variable column widths in xl2007 and it appears
to work.
http://www.andypope.info/charts/colwidth2.htm

The area chart does have x-axis dates. On the Axis Options tab of the Format
Axis dialog is a section Axis Type.
Here you can set the type to be Automatic, Text or Date.

Cheers
Andy

We might have just found the solution to the problem. We use the area chart to create cost curves. In Office 2002 the maximum number for the x-axis was somewhere over 46000. In Office 2007 however, we were able to create an area chart and change the axis to timescale (date-format) if the x value was under 32759.

Try this one.

I have a macro written for Excel (2007 & 2010) that will create a mekko for you. Email me and I'll gladly send it to you.

Hello Kay,

The old Mekko macro that I had for Microsoft 2003 doesn't seem to work for 2007. Do you have a version that will work?

Thanks!

Nick

Under the username of 67L48, I have uploaded an Excel 2010 file that can generate a 15x15 mekko (such as 15 markets and 15 companies).

Hope it works for you. Sometimes, when I first run the macro, it churns for quite a long time (almost like it's broken into an infinite loop). I think it's because I'm a poor programmer and my code is cumbersome. May also have to do with initialization of certain routines into computer RAM, as subsequent mekko generation is quick

Hi Kay,
Is there any way to extend the file that you posted (15x15) to (15*100). ie100 rows. I know that seems like a lot but it would work perfectly for what im trying to do. This would be a huge help!
