MediaPlayer wont work

Whenever I try to play any avi file, windows media player opens up and then it
says it has encountered an error and needs to close. It does this no matter
what I try to play...even when these files work on other computers. What is the
problem? Thanks
 
Third party plugins can cause WMP to encounter problems. Disable them all to
make sure they are not causing the problem (Tools>Plugins).
 
I can't even get to the tools menu because when I open it, it still says it has
encountered a problem and needs to close, even when I am not trying to play
anythiing.
