I thought that I was being smart by going to add/remove
programs -->Add/Remove Windows components, and unchecking windows media
player to prevent users from listening to cds on the computer. I come to
find out when a user inserts a cd, it automatically start WMP. How can I
disable this from running?

That is not an option. It is still a PC and needs to be used for PC
functions. I just want to limit listening to personal CDs on our machines.

Open explorer and right click the drive letter, click the tab'autoplay' and
select from the menu the action to perform when a disc is inserted. There is
an option for 'no action' which will prevent it from playing

"2.4 How do I remove Windows Media Player from my computer entirely?"
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq.aspx

If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows XP SP2,
Windows 2000 SP3, or Windows 2000 SP4, you can remove access to
Windows Media Player by using the Set Program and Access Defaults
feature. Note that this only removes links to the Player. It does
not remove the Windows Media Player software. To remove access to
Windows Media Player, do the following:
In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
Click the Set Program and Access Defaults button, and then choose a
configuration (such as "Non-Microsoft" or "Custom").

Note the comment at the beginning of that section: "Windows Media Player is
a feature of the operating system and cannot be removed entirely." ... as you
discovered

I haven't tried the following, and I would recommend making a restore
point first (if not a complete backup), but if you can roll back to WMP
9 following the directions in the article I posted earlier (and you may
have already done that), then the following command is said to remove
WMP 9:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\wmp.inf,Uninstall

You can try entering that directly in the "run" box from the Start
button, or open a command prompt and try it there.

Hi Mike,

I think Lem has pointed the right direction, please follow his suggestions
and post back if you have any concerns or questions. :)

Have a good day.
