media player question

I have WinXP.

I use GOM and Windows Media Player as my two fax/picure/video clips viewer.

Neither has volume turned on, when chosen.

What are some things I can check to see if it's something simple?

Your problem is not clear. Do you mean
When you start the PC you hear Windows chimes
OK but when you start WMP the loudspeaker is suddenly
1. muted (but can be unmuted and play sounds)?
2. muted and cannot be unmuted?
3. missing?
4 or something different again?

Yes. I hear other things (like Windows chimes). But, when either of GOM
or Windows Media Player come on, no audio

It is not muted.

The article is a really good piece on troubleshooting Windows Media Player.
I think I followed through on most it, but didn't get whatever fixed.

I am going to take the pc to a shop and let them have the problem.

Well, good news. I ran through all the tips and tricks, several times.

Finally, for lack of anything better to do, I did a
restart------and-----BINGO!!! Sound was restarted. I'm now a happy
camper.
