ME to XP Upgrade

Do I purchase the XP Upgrade software when I currently
have ME and want to upgrade to XP. Or, do I buy the full
version of XP and overlay ME ?

Confused in Columbus. (No Michigan jokes please)

Hi,
you can easily upgrade to Windows XP from Win ME.

If you have an ME cd to use during install as upgrade verification, then you
can use the xp upgrade version. If you have ME currently installed, but no
cd, then you can use the upgrade cd, but if you ever want to format and
reinstall xp you won't be able to cause you don't have an ME cd. Otherwise
you need the full version.

Hi,

Upgrade, there is no reason for you to need to pay extra for the full
version.

You can buy and use either. Since the upgrade is cheaper, that's
presumably the one you want.

There is, if you do not have an ME install CD, or if you have restore
discs, don't care to install ME first to re-install XP, or cannot make
an ME install CD from the restored system.

Yes. Setup only needs evidence of the qualifying (ME) system, not of
how you got to it. So if you have a regular ME Upgrade CD (with a Win9x
folder containing .cab files) you need only show it in the drive when XP
Upgrade Setup asks where Windows is. Or you can run the XP CD anyway
from the installed ME and do either an Upgrade (which I would recommend
in the first instance) or a New Install, subsequently formatting the
hard disk for a clean install.

Alex, my install over Windows ME with an Upgrade Windows XP didn't go
well. I have way too many issues to deal with, so I am going to do a
System Recovery (back to the status when bought) with Windwos Me. How do
you get a Clean Install with an Upgrade disk?

I don't recall a new install as one of the choices. Also will I be able
to reinstall?

Thanks
Terry

Run it from the restored ME, start Install, then on the next page change
the drop down box Upgrade to New Install. It will in due course ask
where to install. At that point hit ESC, delete the partition and make
a new one. It will have already satisfied it is over a qualifying
product
