MDE option not available

I want to share my database with users who may not have a copy of Access on
their machine.

It is my understanding that I can do this without violating licensing
requirements by making my database an MDE file and distributing it as a
standalone application.

But the "Make MDE" option is disabled in my version of Access 2002.

What do I need to do to create an MDE file?

Two things:

You can make an MDE in ACCESS 2002 only if the database is in 2002 format.
The default for ACCESS 2002 is the 2000 format; thus, you'll need to convert
the database to 2002 format first.

Second, an .mde file cannot run without ACCESS installed on the PC. What
you're thinking of is the "runtime" version of ACCESS, which can be
installed on a PC and allow an ACCESS database (.mde or .mdb) to run without
a full installation of ACCESS. You must purchase Office XP Developer Edition
to do this, though.
