I wonder if this 5958.dat file issue (released on 4/21) is only for
workstations using McAfee's VSE 8.7 and Windows XP?

Or if it was impacting individual users running WinXP with McAfee Security
Center.

Fortunately, when I checked my dat file it was 5959.dat.

No, it affects all workstations according to the article.

Dat version 5959 which is latest update (4/22) does not effect individual
users. At least it didn't on my machine. BTW, McAfee sent home users an
e-mail this morning advising them to update to dat 5959.

There's another error of McAfee that must be investigated. This is deleting
smss.exe that cause a blue screen after reboot. We run our special software
and boot from it and one of our scanner is McAfee and it always find this
file a generic ab.downloader trojan. Our agents including me is having
problems with this which we need to copy one from a working XP computer.
Blue screen says: SESSION3_INITIALIZATION_FAILED.

Is the file in question (SMSS.EXE) located in...

C:\Windows\msagent\system <=this folder

or...

C:\Windows\System32 <=this folder

on the WinXP (SP3?) computer?

cf. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/smss.exe-9920.html

I hate McAfee.....

Be wise, get rid of the POS.

Or, conversely you might say, "Your mileage may vary."

On my computer McAfee Security Center has blocked a half-dozen viruses in
2010 alone.

So if my PC takes a slight performance hit, no problemo.

That is what people keep saying about Microsoft but they still keep
using Microsoft products. There is nothing wrong with McAfee; It is
the people hating it are completely stupid. I am sing McAfee on some
machines and not seen any problems thus far.

McAfee has admitted to their errors. No need to be a fan boy. Not that
any software manufacturer doesn't have its issues. But when a program
renders Windows useless, that's a step above the "norm".

A performance hit is one thing. To cause Windows not to boot, that's
another. I would think a SSE would know that.

Fact is that was last Wednesday's update in the am by the night time MacAfee
had relised a fixed patch update for that day .
why are you complaining about a one day problem over a week ago.
