McAfee configuration

My neighbour has sought my advice re his renewal of his McAfee
Anti-Virus software. He got his new disk for version 8 and was told the
installation of it wiped out the previous version and the new one was
installed over it.
All seemed well until he tried to update his virus protection and he
noticed the while his "protection" indicating "bars" for the rest of his
protection showed Green and was complete indicating full protection, the
bar for his anti-virus, (and the one below), was coloured Orange and
showed only partial cover, also it showed the word update. When he tried
to update it came back to the same condition with all indicator buttons
showing Green but those two bars were still Orange.
How can he fix this and why does these two indicators remain Orange.
