mb warranties

I haven't heard this discussed here so will offer info picked up at
zipzoomfly. A few, for some reason, show the retailer, rather than the
mfg as the body honoring the warranty. These warranties are of critical
importance to me. As a side-note, most decent pwr.supplies offer a
3-year warranty on retail products.

Motherboard Warranties:

Abit------------3-yr
AOpen-----------1-yr
AsRock----------1-yr
Asus------------3-yr
Biostar---------2-yr
DFI-------------1-yr
ECS-------------1-yr
Epox------------2-yr
Foxconn---------3-yr
Gigabyte--------3-yr
MSI-------------2-yr P/L, 3-yr Parts
Tyan------------3-yr

That chart could be a bit misleading. If I was buying a daimler chrysler
minivan, I would insist on an extended warranty, to cover -replacing- the
transmission, which will likely (more often than not, anyway) be a required
repair within the first 100K miles. But buying a Honda Accord or similar?
Who gives a frick about the warranty? If the car goes more than 6 months
without a problem, then it's probably good to go until long after you're
ready to get rid of it.

In the same way, that chart you posted is a bit misleading. Abit and Tyan
are usually decent quality, so a 3-year warranty on them is redundant. Asus
is hit and miss. I'd try to avoid building with them, but if I HAD TO, it's
nice to know that the 3-year warranty is there. AOpen and DFI are (in terms
of design and build quality) FAR superior to everything else on the list,
but the 1-year warranty will lead some to conclude otherwise. AOpen for
example has a short warranty, but of the listed brands, you are LEAST likely
to need a warranty with AOpen! I find it funny that Asus/Gigabyte is
warranted for 3 years, but Asrock (Asus) is warranted for 1. Asus crap with
a shorter warranty. Wonderful. :) I'm surprised ECS is warranted for more
than a week or so. Foxconn should be pretty good, and the warranty seems to
reflect that. The brands listed as 2-year warranty boards are good budget
choices, usually. Not quite up to AOpen quality, but still shouldn't need a
warranty with them. -Dave

It was all a little surprising to me, as well. I know DFI has had some
great performance reviews and that you had found AOpen to be solid and
reliable. I wonder how these outfits actually honor the warranties?
I remember having to club Dell over the head to get them to honor the
terms of a Latitude warranty. I'd rather build my own machine
blindfolded than buy anything from Dell for any price...grr, I just
got myself pissed off. Signing-off to go pour a glass of 12 year old
Scotch.
