Maxxed System PID

Have an issue where the System PID (8) is using all available resources
Have done scans for viruses and found none
Had just downloaded a number of updates from Windows Update
OS will come up, but very very slow
Attempted to repair OS, had to reinstall

Any suggestions

KB article 841382: "Your Windows 2000-based computer stops responding, you
cannot log on to Windows, or your CPU usage for the System process
approaches 100 percent "
