Max UDMA Not Setting

E

Eric

I've got two drives on the primary IDE channel. Both are
Maxtor with the master at 40gb and the slave at 20gb.
They support up to UDMA mode 6 and mode 5 (ATA-133 and
ATA-100) respectively. However, WinXP Home has them set
one mode lower than they are capable of (i.e. mode 5 and
mode 4). My mobo is a Soyo with an Sis 645 chipset and
supports ATA-133. Soyo's Knowledge Base says to use
WinXP's driver. Maxtor says it's not their problem.
Microsoft Knowledge Base only acknowledges a problem
under Win2K.

I ran into an article suggesting deleting all IDE drivers
in Device Manager, then rebooting and letting them
reinstall....this would redetect the drives and the right
UDMA setting. No luck.

I've heard that if WinXP decides it isn't happy with a
drive, it will back-off the UDMA setting. Is there
anyway I can check if this is the case? Any way I can
force the UDMA mode? Any other ideas?

TIA....Eric
